IC1396: The Elephant's Trunk Nebula, Cepheus
A very well-known target about 2400ly distant in the constellation Cepheus, IC1396 is an emission nebula ionized by the bright star at the centre of the obvious "trunk".
Elephant's trunks, or more formally cold molecular clouds, form on the outer edges of an unevenly ionized H.II cloud as a result of interaction with solar wind from O & B type stars.
